Walnut Street Development's conversion of the former Rainbow Auto Body Shop in Logan Circle combines historic industrial architecture with postmodern design, creating 21 industrial chic lofts. Twelve-foot-high ceilings, large windows and open floor plans create dramatic light-filled spaces. Exposed concrete ceilings and ductwork, steel beams and other industrial finishes carry through a sophisticated urban theme. Joined to the historic building is a 21st-century addition featuring smooth metal panels, a sleek metal-framed metal window system and louvered sun shades over large sheets of window glass. Located on Church Street, N.W. between 14th and 15th Streets, these unique homes have been designed to achieve a character and balance of high architectural standards of style, grace and materials. Rainbow Lofts won the 2005 AIA Award for Excellence.
